Zeolite quality matters: What you need to know before buying zeolite

Between myths, cheap powders, and clinical studies: Expert Dr. Horst Poosch explains how to separate the wheat from the chaff before buying zeolite.

Preliminary remark: Nowadays, there are a huge number of suppliers of zeolite products, and just as numerous are the sometimes contradictory, erroneous, or outdated statements about this volcanic rock that is so beneficial to our health. But anyone who wants to find their way through this “zeolite jungle” has to do a lot of research and will usually still come up against their limits: What is true and what is not?

Even we at ZEOLITH WISSEN (ZEOLITE KNOWLEDGE) were unable to find definitive answers to some questions ourselves, so we sent a long list of questions to several leading companies. We are delighted to have secured an interview with one of the most knowledgeable experts in the field of zeolite, from whom we also learned a great deal! However, as we wanted to get clear and up-to-date answers to some questions about zeolite once and for all, this interview has turned out to be quite long. For those of you in a hurry, we have summarized the 10 key facts from the conversation in an info box at the end of the interview.

Buying zeolite: Many questions, myths, and misinformation cause uncertainty

Clinoptilolite zeolite, which is used in medicine, is one of around 200 known types of the volcanic rock zeolite. It has long been valued in naturopathy for its detoxifying and preventive properties. In times of growing environmental pollution, it is now also coming into focus in human medicine—as a simple and practical prevention and protection module that can be easily integrated into everyday life.

But the central question keeps coming up: “Which zeolite should I buy at the pharmacy or online?” This is where there is a great deal of uncertainty. Myths persist on the internet: How does zeolite really work in the body? Does zeolite release aluminum into the body? When is zeolite useful? And above all: How can I recognize a product of genuine quality?

From simple volcanic rock to medical product: How PANACEO brought zeolite into conventional medicine

To clarify the many unanswered questions, we spoke with Dr. Horst Poosch, commercial director of PANACEO International GmbH, head of regulatory affairs, and court-certified expert for medical products and quality management.

When fewer toxins enter the bloodstream through the intestinal wall, the immune system can stabilize, inflammatory processes are reduced, and liver values can also improve. These effects have been scientifically proven, at least for PMA zeolite.
Dr. Horst Poosch, PANACEO

How zeolite works in the body: primary and secondary effects

ZEOLITH WISSEN (ZW):
“Dr. Poosch, we are often asked: ‘How does zeolite actually work in the body? Many people still believe that zeolite extracts valuable nutrients from the body, while others think that zeolite supplies minerals. Can you please clarify this for us?”
Dr. Horst Poosch (HP):
“First things first: Zeolite—more specifically, clinoptilolite zeolite—does not supplement our diet. It does not provide minerals or energy. Its effect is purely physical. This means that zeolite acts like a filter. It selectively attracts pollutants, toxins, and heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, and nickel in the intestine, binds them firmly to its surface, and removes them from the body with the stool.”
ZW:
“So you could say that this is the primary effect of zeolite, but there are also numerous secondary effects?”
HP:
“Yes, that is the primary effect – and, incidentally, this is crucial for the approval of a zeolite product as a medical product. In addition, there are numerous secondary effects that can be attributed to the primary effect. When fewer toxins enter the bloodstream through the intestinal wall, the immune system can stabilize, inflammatory processes tend to decrease, and liver values can also improve. These secondary effects have been scientifically proven, but this only applies to PMA zeolite – they explain why many users feel significantly better. In short: Zeolite primarily binds harmful substances and strengthens the intestinal wall – secondarily, it relieves the entire organism.”
ZW:
“Dr. Poosch, the market for zeolite products is growing rapidly. Many suppliers advertise on the internet or even in pharmacies with certified quality. How does PMA zeolite from PANACEO differ from others in this respect?”

Zeolite quality: Only one medical product is scientifically proven and safe for consumers

HP:
“First of all, it must be said that zeolite is a natural rock—and as with any natural product, there are of course major differences in its occurrence, composition, and thus quality. Many suppliers simply sell ground rock without it ever having undergone comprehensive testing or an approval process. Unfortunately, this is still legally possible today, as long as they do not explicitly declare it for human consumption. However, consumers who take unapproved zeolite powder are taking a high risk, because no one checks whether it is safe. At PANACEO, we have deliberately chosen the more difficult, but only reputable path: PMA zeolite is an officially approved medical product. This means that we had to undergo extensive safety and efficacy tests that are similar to those required for pharmaceuticals.”
ZW:
“Many people say, ‘Zeolite is just zeolite – why should I pay more for your PMA zeolite when I can get a cheaper product on the internet?’”
HP:
“I can’t understand how some people are willing to compromise on quality and safety when it comes to a product that is supposed to benefit their health. The approval procedures were established for good reason, and they are very extensive and complex for good reason. Approval is a costly and lengthy process, and rightly so. Because in reality, there is a huge difference between using a tested medical product and a powder of unknown origin. There are zeolite deposits around the world that are highly contaminated. Anyone who takes something like this on a daily basis is putting their health at risk instead of protecting it. Another point: many suppliers refer to our scientific studies on PMA zeolite in their advertising. However, these studies apply exclusively to our product because they are based solely on our unique, patented PMA zeolite. If someone sells a different powder or capsules and claims that these PMA studies also apply to them, then that is simply misleading, to put it mildly.
We know of zeolite deposits around the world, and some contain extremely high levels of contamination. There are deposits that are so contaminated that they would be toxic if taken daily. Anyone who buys such an uncertified powder may not notice it at first, but in the long term it can have serious consequences.
Dr. Horst Poosch, PANACEO
ZW:
“In plain language, does that mean that only with an approved medical product such as your PMA zeolite can I, as a consumer, be sure that its effectiveness and safety have been proven?”
HP:
“Exactly. Anything else is a game of chance – and when it comes to health, you shouldn’t take any chances.”
ZW:
“Dr. Poosch, you just explained that many suppliers simply sell ground rock. Can you tell us more specifically what the biggest risks of such cheap products are?”
HP:
“The biggest risk is contamination with harmful substances and significantly reduced or even non-existent effectiveness. We know of zeolite deposits around the world, and some contain extremely high levels of contamination. We have received samples that were so contaminated that they would be toxic if taken daily. Anyone who buys such an uncertified powder may not notice it at first, but in the long term it can have serious consequences. A second major issue is the lack of proof of effectiveness. Everyone can form their own opinion on this. Why do other zeolite suppliers provide virtually no reliable evidence of effectiveness? Why do so many refer to our studies when they could conduct their own? Why don’t they provide this evidence? Some people confuse zeolite with activated carbon. Activated carbon actually binds everything—including minerals and vitamins. Zeolite, on the other hand, is selective: due to its crystal structure, it only absorbs substances of a certain size and charge, in this case heavy metals and toxins. Minerals and vitamins are not extracted from the organism.

Danger from incorrect grinding: Why nanoparticles are problematic

ZW:
“Many suppliers also advertise ‘ultra-fine’ grinding. To the layman, this sounds positive at first. Is it really an advantage?”
HP:
“No, not necessarily. If the zeolite is ground too finely, it can enter the nano range. And nanoparticles can penetrate cell walls and enter the bloodstream. They overcome the body’s own protective barriers and migrate uncontrollably and uncontrollably through the body. Deposits and disturbances can often only be detected years or even decades later, and whether they can still be treated at all is more than uncertain. This is exactly what we want to avoid at all costs. Zeolite should remain in the intestine and act as a filter there—it should not be distributed or deposited throughout the body. Our PMA zeolite is optimized to have an extremely large surface area—but at the same time remains safely within this size range so that it remains in the intestine. This is the crucial difference between us and suppliers who simply “grind it finer and finer.” Those who do so simply cannot identify the risks, and therefore these risks are neither recorded nor reduced. This is negligent, unnecessary, and comes at the expense of the health of patients and customers.”
ZW:
“So it’s not about ‘as small as possible’, but about finding the right balance?”
HP:
“Exactly. We need maximum binding surface area for harmful substances and toxins – but no nanoparticles in the body. We can only achieve this balance with our special PMA process. The extremely rugged surface maximizes effectiveness with the greatest possible safety, but at the same time makes the material extremely difficult to process. Only in-depth expertise and high-quality special machinery enable it to be processed as a 100% active ingredient, completely without anti-caking agents, as is the case with PANACEO.”

From the quarry to the store: the long journey of PMA zeolite to the consumer

ZW:
“Many people imagine that mining zeolite is very simple: ‘You take a chunk of rock from the quarry, grind it finely, and fill it into cans. ‘ What does it actually look like in reality?”
Of 200 tons of mined material, only about one ton is of sufficient quality for use in the human body. The rest goes to agriculture or industry and other manufacturers. This effort is crucial, because it is the only way we can ensure that our PMA zeolite is absolutely pure and safe.
Dr. Horst Poosch, PANACEO
HP:
“The reality is much more complicated. In a quarry, you don’t just find ‘the one zeolite’, but many different layers and qualities. These often have different colors – which is a clear indication that the composition varies. We have to define exactly which layer from which deposit is suitable for our PMA zeolite and select it carefully. Of 200 tons of mined material, only about one ton is of sufficient quality for use in the human body. The rest goes to agriculture or industry and other manufacturers. The highest quality is contractually secured exclusively for PANACEO. This effort is crucial, because it is the only way we can ensure that our PMA zeolite is absolutely pure and safe. In addition, the product is packaged in specially labeled “BigBags” to avoid confusion, transported under controlled conditions, stored in a controlled, isolated location, subjected to extensive incoming goods inspections and approvals through internal and external analyses, and all processes are fully controlled. Special production facilities are also used to ensure proper processing and exclude all possible sources of contamination. As a result, all PANACEO products can be traced to meet the highest standards of quality, safety, homogeneity, efficacy, usability, and sustainability.“
ZW:
“That’s intense. How do you control that only the very best material is used in the end?”
HP:
“This is done in several steps. First, we conduct supplier audits: we examine the geology of the deposit, perform layer analyses, take samples directly on site, and inspect the production facilities and processes. Mining only takes place if these samples meet our criteria. Before production begins, all facilities are shut down and thoroughly cleaned to ensure maximum purity. After mining, the large quantities are separated, the material is processed under strict conditions, and then immediately filled into specially labeled and particularly secure BigBags. Samples are taken continuously—at least one per BigBag—and sent immediately to PANACEO. We then check the mineralogy throughout the entire production process so that we can immediately detect any possible fluctuations in the composition. In addition, comprehensive tests are carried out by external accredited laboratories to check for possible contamination, for example by artificial radioactivity, pesticides, heavy metals, and the like. Only when all this has been done is the material released for transport under controlled conditions. Only when all the results are satisfactory is the material released for further processing. In total, we carry out over 1,000 analyses before a PMA zeolite product is even released onto the market.”
ZW:
“That sounds like an enormous amount of work; I hadn’t imagined it would be so complex. Why is this extensive procedure so important?”
HP:
“Because it’s about people’s health! Quality and safety cannot be left to chance here. We also have complete traceability: for every can, we can say which quarry, which layer, and even which big bag the material comes from—and which employees processed it and when. We can trace all processing steps and thus identify every possible source of contamination in the event of an incident. This level of control is why our PMA zeolite offers a level of safety that other products cannot guarantee.”

The heart of quality zeolite: the patented PMA activation process

ZW:
“You have already explained how strict your quality control is for raw materials. But what happens after that? How is clinoptilolite zeolite ultimately turned into PMA zeolite or PANACEO zeolite, as it is often called?”
HP:
“The key factor is our PMA activation process. PMA stands for ”Panaceo Micro Activation.” This is a special technical process that we have developed and patented over many years. Essentially, it works like this: the zeolite is placed between two rotating discs in a high-speed machine. This creates an extremely strong vortex. The particles collide with each other at extremely high speed, breaking apart and becoming literally fragmented. This greatly increases their surface area – and that is precisely what makes PMA zeolite so effective at binding pollutants.”
ZW:
“That sounds exciting and also understandable. But there are copycats everywhere, especially in medicine: is this process easy to replicate?”
HP:
“No, not at all. Our PMA activation process is not a standard grinding process that you can buy or cobble together somewhere. It involves special machine construction that we developed and implemented ourselves. Every component—from the rotating discs to the conveyor systems—is precisely tailored to this purpose and cannot be purchased. That’s why Only zeolite products that have been optimized using this process can refer to the numerous scientific studies on PMA zeolite. Those who simply grind rock have nothing in common with our zeolite – even if, as already mentioned, some repeatedly try to refer to our research in their advertising.”

Highest production standards – PMA zeolite production is comparable to pharmaceutical standards

ZW:
“When people think of production, many have images of factory halls in their minds, where machines routinely fill containers with powder. How is your PMA zeolite actually manufactured?“
HP:
”It’s not quite that simple. The production of PMA zeolite requires the highest purity and precision. We have our own production areas with strict hygiene regulations – comparable to pharmaceutical standards. Every employee wears special clothing and shoes, mouth and head protection. This prevents foreign substances from entering the production process. A crucial point is that there are countless possible sources of contamination in a production hall – from ballpoint pens and work clothes to cleaning agents. We have clear rules governing all of this: which materials may be used, how cleaning must be carried out, and what drying times apply in order to avoid residues and contamination. The requirements for production facilities, containers, packaging, and storage are even more extensive. All of these processes are interlinked and influence each other. If you take a look at the various reasons for recalls on the market, you will quickly see that the most common reasons for recalls are contamination with microbes, bacteria, mold, metals, and plastics, right down to residues from cleaning agents. Identifying and managing all these potential sources of contamination is the fine art of quality management—something that not every company in our industry masters as well as PANACEO.”
ZW:
“And what happens if something does not meet the specifications?”
HP:
“Then the entire batch is immediately stopped and destroyed! We do not compromise. Quality is non-negotiable. We would rather forego material than take a risk. It is only through this consistency that we have been able to establish ourselves as the market leader and gain the trust of many zeolite customers.”

Global patents, expertise, and experience: How PANACEO protects itself from imitators

ZW:
“You have described the PMA activation process to us, and the process is patented – but still: How does PANACEO protect itself against imitators? As we know, patents alone are often not enough.”
HP:
“Yes, the PMA process is patented – in many countries, including the US and China. But patents are always a double-edged sword. They are expensive and must be renewed regularly. And often, all it takes is a small technical change to circumvent a patent. The real protection therefore lies not only in the patent, but in the combination of our – I can safely say – unique expertise, quality management, regulatory knowledge, and decades of experience. Our process, our production facilities, our QM system, and our international approval expertise – all of this together is practically impossible to copy.”
ZW:
“Does that mean that imitators can try to grind in a similar way, but they can’t achieve the same effect?”
HP:
“Exactly. Some try to refer to our studies with cheap powders. But as I said, our clinical studies only apply to PANACEO’s PMA zeolite. Anyone selling a different product would have to conduct their own studies to prove the same effect. It’s easy to see why that doesn’t happen.”
ZW:
“So the actual protection is less a paper document and more the sum of experience, research, and quality?”
HP:
“Yes, that sums it up. A patent is important, but the real protection lies in the fact that we have built up a unique combination over years and now decades – with intensive research, numerous studies, and a QM system that no other provider has in this form. We have been on the market for 20 years, now process around 100 tons of zeolite for human use per year, and bring between 400,000 and 500,000 cans per year to market – and this without any incidents. This clearly speaks for the high quality and effectiveness of our PANACEO system.”
ZW:
“Many people are unsure, partly because there are still different interpretations on the internet: Can a zeolite product be a dietary supplement, a drug, or always a medical product? Can you please clarify this for us?”
HP:
“Gladly. Basically, there are three relevant categories in Europe in this context: Medicines must generally have a direct pharmacological effect and undergo a very complex regulatory approval process. Dietary supplements provide nutrients or vitamins and may only be sold if they are approved as foodstuffs, and there are strict prohibitions on health-related statements, known as ‘health claims’. . And then there are medical products, which are also subject to a complex approval process, whereby the distinction from medicinal products is made on the basis of efficacy. Medical products may not achieve their main effect by pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic means. In addition, medical products must have a proven medical purpose. Zeolite falls precisely into this category.”
ZW:
“To put it simply again: Why is it so important that zeolite is a medical product and not a dietary supplement?”
HP:
“Because zeolite does not supplement food. Zeolite does not provide vitamins or minerals in physiologically relevant amounts, but acts purely physically by binding harmful substances in the intestine and cleansing the intestinal wall. Zeolite therefore meets the criteria for a medical product. And that is precisely why it is so strictly regulated: a medical product must demonstrate a risk-benefit ratio. In other words, it is not enough for it to be ‘safe’. It must be shown that the benefits clearly outweigh the risks – and at the same time, all risks must be minimized as far as possible.”
Zeolite acts purely physically by binding harmful substances in the intestine and restoring the intestinal wall. Zeolite therefore meets the criteria for a medical product.
Dr. Horst Poosch, PANACEO

Zeolite as a medical product: What the EU requires today and in the future

ZW:
“And what about current European legislation? As far as I know, there will be some changes soon?”
HP:
“Yes, that’s right. Since 2021, only the new Medical Device Regulation (MDR) applies in Europe and the previous directive has expired. Above all, the requirements have been tightened once again. This means that clinical studies, quality management, traceability, market observation, and risk management have all become significantly stricter. The transition periods for this will run until the end of 2028, but after that, all zeolite products must be fully approved in accordance with the MDR. This is not a problem for us at PANACEO, because we have been working at the highest level for many years anyway. However, many other suppliers who have simply been selling powder up to now will not be able to overcome these hurdles. And that’s a good thing – because at the end of the day, it’s all about the health of patients.”

PANACEO: The market’s synonym for zeolite

ZW:
“For many, the research and development company PANACEO has long been synonymous with zeolite per se. How did that come about?”
HP:
“Yes, we are proud of that, because it shows that people are interested in high quality, do their research, and are well informed. There are several reasons why ‘PANACEO’ has become a synonym for zeolite. First, we have been in the market for over 20 years and have consistently focused on quality and scientific studies. While other suppliers simply sell rock powder, we have undertaken extensive clinical trials, quality management, and international approval. As a result, PANACEO has become virtually inseparable from the term zeolite—just as people often refer to paper tissues as “Tissue.”

Zeolite: Education needed to combat myths and misinformation

ZW:
“Despite everything, there are still many myths and misinformation circulating on the internet about zeolite. How do you deal with that?”
HP:
“That is indeed a big problem. Some people still claim that zeolite draws minerals and vitamins out of the body – which is simply not true. Others claim that zeolite releases the light metal aluminum into the body. That is not true, at least not for our PMA zeolite. Finally, some competitors repeatedly refer to our studies in a downright cheeky and misleading way, even though they sell completely different products. This is difficult for consumers to understand, which is precisely why platforms such as your ZEOLITH WISSEN are so important: they provide clarification, separate facts from myths, and highlight the differences.”
ZW:
“So, in the end, it’s not just about the product itself, but also about communicating it correctly?”
HP:
“Exactly. No matter how good a product is, if consumers don’t understand the criteria that make it safe and effective, they will lose trust in it. That’s why we consistently focus on education and transparency. We want people to understand why PMA zeolite is a tested medical product and what sets it apart from others. This is the only way to build long-term trust—and that is the basis of any successful health application.”
ZW:
“Thank you for all these explanations and clarifications. My last question: What are your hopes for PMA zeolite in the future?”
HP:
“I hope that consumers will continue to ask even more critical questions before buying a zeolite product in the future. And in view of the ever-increasing burdens on us humans in terms of air pollution, environmental toxins such as heavy metals and pesticides, and drinking water, I hope that our PMA zeolite will be used more and more for detoxification and prevention, both in the clinical field and by people themselves, as is already the case. We at PANACEO are therefore continuing to work tirelessly on our product, primarily through clinical studies and research.“
ZW:
”Dr. Poosch, thank you very much for this insightful conversation.”

The interview at a glance – the 10 most important facts about PMA zeolite

Fact 1: The selective filter in the intestine

PMA zeolite works purely physically: it binds heavy metals and toxins in the intestine and removes them from the body – without extracting minerals.

Fact 2: Not all powders are the same

Many suppliers sell untested rock. Only approved medical products such as PMA zeolite are tested for safety and efficacy.

Fact 3: Nanoparticles are a risk

“Grinding ever finer” sounds good, but it is dangerous. Nanoparticles can enter the bloodstream. PMA zeolite remains safely in the intestine.

Fact 4: From the quarry to the can

Only about 1 in 200 tons is pure enough for human consumption. PANACEO tests every batch with over 1000 tests – incidentally, the EU will make such checks mandatory from 2028.

Fact 5: The core – PMA micro-activation

A patented process massively increases the surface area of PMA zeolite. This is the only way to achieve the unique effectiveness of PMA zeolite, which has been proven in clinical gold standard studies.

Fact 6: PMA zeolite studies only apply to PMA zeolite

Almost all relevant clinical studies in Europe refer exclusively to PANACEO zeolite. Suppliers of other zeolite products cannot refer to these studies due to differences in materials.

Fact 7: Production according to pharmaceutical standards

PANACEO produces according to hygiene and quality guidelines as in the pharmaceutical industry – every possible source of contamination is excluded.

Fact 8: PANACEO as a synonym for zeolite

Over 20 years of research, studies, and approvals have made PANACEO the benchmark—today, the name stands for tested quality in zeolite.

Fact 9: Myths and misinformation

Zeolite has been proven not to extract minerals or release aluminum—at least not the tested PMA zeolite. Education protects against misinformation.

Fact 10: Providing for the future of your health

In view of increasing environmental pollution, PMA zeolite is becoming even more important – for detoxification, protection of the intestinal barrier, and prevention.
